This is the background
The scene setup
This is render 1. I'm using 2 light sources. Caustics created using a gel on light source (1)
and underwater sun ray effect created by adding noise on light source (2). Depth of field used.
And this is render 2. Same 2 light sources but without the gel on light source (1), i.e no simulated caustics.
In this picture I have merged the 2 above renders and deleted most of render 1 above the sea surface (left some caustic reflections on the hull).
In the next step I adjusted the color balance to be more yellowish and greenish and I also placed a transparent gradient on the bottom half of the picture.
Added the sky by merging in clouds from 2 different sky photos.
The bubbles and plancton were also painted in post.
Painted the splashes and dripping water at the ships front.
Finally I copied the entire image into a new layer, blurred it, played around with the channel mixer, set the layer properties to "soft light" and lowered
its opacity to about 50%.
