From December 2025 to January 2026, we spent a month traveling through Vietnam and Thailand. This was our third trip to Vietnam and our thirteenth (I think) visit to Thailand.
In Vietnam, we visited Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Can Tho in the Mekong Delta, Rach Gia, and Duong Dong on Phu Quoc Island. In Thailand, we rented a car in Bangkok and drove west to Kanchanaburi. From there, we followed the River Kwai further west, staying at several places along the way. It was our fourth time renting a car in Thailand, but the first time I drove in central Bangkok, something I initially found quite intimidating.
I have mixed feelings about Phu Quoc. I really enjoyed the chaotic charm of Duong Dong, and it was easy to take a Grab to a quiet, deserted beach. However, the beaches near the large resort hotels were crowded and overpriced. Many sections were private, reserved exclusively for hotel guests. There were also quite a few tourists whose dress and behavior felt inappropriate.
