This trip to Thailand took place during those exact few weeks when the world began to realize the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t going to stay contained. As news broke of outbreaks across Italy and Iran, the travel landscape shifted beneath our feet in real-time. Some restaurants had signs forbidding entry for visitors from China, Iran etc.
In Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, the local response was immediate. Mask-wearing became an absolute baseline for stepping out onto the street. The contrast was jarring: pristine, sun-bleached island docks and turquoise waters lined with health checkpoints where officials meticulously scanned everyone's temperatures before they could step onto the sand. Looking through these frames, you can see the friction between the freedom of travel and the sudden, heavy onset of a global crisis.
